Atlanta University Center to get 40 extra security cams
Extra security will arrive for students at the Atlanta University Center in the form of additional cameras.
The Atlanta University Center is a consortium in southwest Atlanta that includes Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College and the Morehouse School of Medicine.
According to Atlanta Police, crime stats for the area show that cases involving rape are up 100 percent and residential robbery cases are up 300 percent in the last year.
When asked if it would make her feel safe if more cameras where around, student Breeahna Gresham said, “Of course, especially being in downtown Atlanta. There’s a lot of crime, a lot of drug addicts.”
Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced at Morehouse College the addition of 40 surveillance cameras to watch over the Atlanta University Center and surrounding neighborhoods.
“The city of Atlanta has moved forward with a $300,000 grant to match Morehouse’s grant to add cameras for the safety and security of your campus,” Reed said.
Prior to the announcement, students, community activists and the NAACP called on the mayor to do something to curb crime in the area. They took a stand and occupied corners near the university center where violence has been rampant.
The cameras will be integrated into Atlanta’s Video Integration Center and will monitor all schools within the university center and surrounding neighborhoods.
All the cameras should be fully functional by early 2016.
